Fingerpicking & Flat-Picking on the Mountain Dulcimer

About

Flat-picking & Finger-picking on the Mountain Dulcimer shares what JM Bolton has learned not just from playing the mountain dulcimer but also from some fifty-odd years of studying music and playing in small groups and orchestras. She developed this method of teaching flat-picking for her students, and the lessons are intended for the beginner as well as intermediate and advanced dulcimer players. When Bolton teaches beginners, she first shows them basic strummed chords and then immediately teaches them how to flat-pick. This is not something, she says, reserved only for the advanced player. The exercises and patterns that she uses are included in the book along with 25 songs tabbed for finger-picking and flat-picking. The tunes range from simple to more interesting. Everything you need to know to play the songs is explained. And, best of all, this is a hands-on teaching method -- there are more activities in the book than there is verbiage.

Praise for this book

JM Bolton is a very good teacher. I have been having fun learning how to finger pick. It does require coordination of your fingers, keeping a steady rhythm, and patience. Not something that will allow you to acquire the skill doing in a day.

Fantastic book for learning the mountain dulcimer
